    I LIKE THIS ILLUSTRATION. BUT IT IS A BIT DISCONCERTING, WHY IS THE FELLOW ALL BENT UNDER GOD? HE IS NOT BOWING, HE LOOKS TO BE ATTEMPTING AN ESCAPE.

    It’s King David, and it’s hard to say exactly why he’s so scrunched down… One very practical reason is that the scribe and illustrator were often different people. The scribe would write the text and maybe rough out the initial, then let the illustrator do his (or her) thing afterward. It’s possible that the illustrator really wanted to get David in there but was constrained by the space left by the scribe!
