Confession of Sin [+][-]

Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, so that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence may be kept.

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence may be kept.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

The Psalm or Psalms Appointed

Psalm 47 Omnes gentes, plaudite

O sing praises sing praises unto our God; O sing praises sing praises unto our King.

CLAP your hands together, all ye peoples: *
O sing unto God with the voice of melody.
For the LORD is high, and to be feared; *
he is the great King upon all the earth.
He shall subdue the peoples under us, *
and the nations under our feet.
He shall choose out an heritage for us, *
even the excellency of Jacob, whom he loved.
God is gone up with a merry noise, *
and the LORD with the sound of the trump.
O sing praises, sing praises unto our God; *
O sing praises, sing praises unto our King.
For God is the King of all the earth: *
      sing ye praises with understanding.
God reigneth over the nations; *
God sitteth upon his holy seat.
The princes of the peoples are joined unto the people of the God of Abraham; *
for God, which is very high exalted, doth defend the earth, as it were with a shield.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O sing praises sing praises unto our God; O sing praises sing praises unto our King.

Psalm 48 Magnus Dominus

For this God is our God for ever and ever; he shall be our guide unto death.

GREAT is the LORD, and highly to be praised *
in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill.
The hill of Sion is a fair place, and the joy of the whole earth; *
upon the north side lieth the city of the great King: God is well known in her palaces as a sure refuge.
For lo, the kings of the earth *
were gathered, and gone by together.
They marvelled to see such things; *
they were astonished, and suddenly cast down.
Fear came there upon them; and sorrow, *
as upon a woman in her travail.
Thou dost break the ships of the sea *
      through the east wind.
Like as we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God; *
God upholdeth the same for ever.
We wait for thy loving-kindness, O God, *
in the midst of thy temple.
O God, according to thy Name, so is thy praise unto the world's end; *
thy right hand is full of righteousness.
10    Let the mount Sion rejoice, and the daughters of Judah be glad, *
      because of thy judgments.
11    Walk about Sion, and go round about her; *
      and tell the towers thereof.
12    Mark well her bulwarks, consider her palaces, *
that ye may tell them that come after.
13    For this God is our God for ever and ever: *
he shall be our guide unto death.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

For this God is our God for ever and ever; he shall be our guide unto death.

Psalm 49 Audite haec, omnes

But God hath delivered my soul from the place of hell, for he shall receive me.

O HEAR ye this, all ye people; *
      ponder it with your ears, all ye that dwell in the world;
High and low, rich and poor, *
      one with another.
My mouth shall speak of wisdom, *
and my heart shall muse of understanding.
I will incline mine ear to the parable, *
and show my dark speech upon the harp.
Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, *
when wickedness at my heels compasseth me round about?
There be some that put their trust in their goods, *
and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches.
But no man may deliver his brother, *
nor give a ransom unto God for him,
(For it cost more to redeem their souls, *
so that he must let that alone for ever;)
That he shall live alway, *
      and not see the grave.
10    For he seeth that wise men also die and perish together, *
as well as the ignorant and foolish, and leave their riches for other.
11    And yet they think that their houses shall continue for ever, and that their dwelling-places shall endure from one generation to another; *
and call the lands after their own names.
12    Nevertheless, man being in honour abideth not, *
      seeing he may be compared unto the beasts that perish;
13    This their way is very foolishness; *
yet their posterity praise their saying.
14    They lie in the grave like sheep; death is their shepherd; and the righteous shall have dominion over them in the morning: *
their beauty shall consume in the sepulchre, and have no abiding.
15    But God hath delivered my soul from the power of the grave; *
      for he shall receive me.
16    Be not thou afraid, though one be made rich, *
      or if the glory of his house be increased;
17    For he shall carry nothing away with him when he dieth, *
neither shall his pomp follow him.
18    For while he lived, he counted himself an happy man; *
and so long as thou doest well unto thyself, men will speak good of thee.
19    He shall follow the generation of his fathers, *
      and shall never see light.
20    Man that is in honour but hath no understanding *
is compared unto the beasts that perish.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

But God hath delivered my soul from the place of hell, for he shall receive me.

Psalm 47 Omnes gentes, plaudite

O sing praises sing praises unto our God; O sing praises sing praises unto our King.

Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.

Clap your hands, all you peoples; *
shout to God with a cry of joy.
For the LORD Most High is to be feared; *
he is the great King over all the earth.
He subdues the peoples under us, *
and the nations under our feet.
He chooses our inheritance for us, *
the pride of Jacob whom he loves.
God has gone up with a shout, *
the LORD with the sound of the ram's-horn.
Sing praises to God, sing praises; *
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
For God is King of all the earth; *
sing praises with all your skill.
God reigns over the nations; *
God sits upon his holy throne.
The nobles of the peoples have gathered together *
with the people of the God of Abraham.
10   The rulers of the earth belong to God, *
      and he is highly exalted.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:*
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

O sing praises sing praises unto our God; O sing praises sing praises unto our King.

Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.

Psalm 48 Magnus Dominus

For this God is our God for ever and ever; he shall be our guide unto death.

This God is our God for ever and ever; he shall be our guide for evermore.

Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised; *
in the city of our God is his holy hill.
Beautiful and lofty, the joy of all the earth, is the hill of Zion, *
the very center of the world and the city of the great King.
God is in her citadels; *
he is known to be her sure refuge.
Behold, the kings of the earth assembled *
      and marched forward together.
They looked and were astounded; *
they retreated and fled in terror.
  Trembling seized them there; *
they writhed like a woman in childbirth, like ships of the sea when the east wind shatters them.
As we have heard, so have we seen, in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God; *
God has established her for ever.
We have waited in silence on your loving-kindness, O God, *
in the midst of your temple.
Your praise, like your Name, O God, reaches to the world's end; *
your right hand is full of justice.
10   Let Mount Zion be glad and the cities of Judah rejoice, *
      because of your judgments.
11   Make the circuit of Zion; walk round about her; *
count the number of her towers.
12   Consider well her bulwarks; examine her strongholds; *
that you may tell those who come after.
13   This God is our God for ever and ever; *
he shall be our guide for evermore.

Amen.

For this God is our God for ever and ever; he shall be our guide unto death.

This God is our God for ever and ever; he shall be our guide for evermore.

Psalm 49 Audite haec, omnes

But God hath delivered my soul from the place of hell, for he shall receive me.

But God will ransom my life; he will snatch me from the grasp of death.

Hear this, all you peoples; hearken, all you who dwell in the world, *
you of high degree and low, rich and poor together.
My mouth shall speak of wisdom, *
and my heart shall meditate on understanding.
I will incline my ear to a proverb *
and set forth my riddle upon the harp.
Why should I be afraid in evil days, *
when the wickedness of those at my heels surrounds me,
The wickedness of those who put their trust in their goods, *
and boast of their great riches?
We can never ransom ourselves, *
      or deliver to God the price of our life;
For the ransom of our life is so great, *
that we should never have enough to pay it,
In order to live for ever and ever, *
      and never see the grave.
For we see that the wise die also; like the dull and stupid they perish *
and leave their wealth to those who come after them.
10   Their graves shall be their homes for ever, their dwelling places from generation to generation, *
though they call the lands after their own names.
11   Even though honored, they cannot live for ever; *
they are like the beasts that perish.
12   Such is the way of those who foolishly trust in themselves, *
and the end of those who delight in their own words.
13   Like a flock of sheep they are destined to die; Death is their shepherd; *
they go down straightway to the grave.
14   Their form shall waste away, *
and the land of the dead shall be their home.
15   But God will ransom my life; *
he will snatch me from the grasp of death.
16   Do not be envious when some become rich, *
      or when the grandeur of their house increases;
17   For they will carry nothing away at their death, *
nor will their grandeur follow them.
18   Though they thought highly of themselves while they lived, *
and were praised for their success,
19   They shall join the company of their forebears, *
who will never see the light again.
20   Those who are honored, but have no understanding, *
are like the beasts that perish.

Amen.

But God hath delivered my soul from the place of hell, for he shall receive me.

But God will ransom my life; he will snatch me from the grasp of death.

Psalm 128 Beati omnes

Blessed are all they that fear the LORD and walk in his ways.

BLESSED are all they that fear the LORD, *
      and walk in his ways.
For thou shalt eat the labours of thine hands: *
O well is thee, and happy shalt thou be.
Thy wife shall be as the fruitful vine *
      upon the walls of thine house;
Thy children like the olive-branches *
      round about thy table.
Lo, thus shall the man be blessed *
      that feareth the LORD.
The LORD from out of Sion shall so bless thee, *
      that thou shalt see Jerusalem in prosperity all thy life long;
Yea, that thou shalt see thy children's children, *
      and peace upon Israel.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Blessed are all they that fear the LORD and walk in his ways.

Psalm 129 Sæpe expugnaverunt

The LORD prosper you.

MANY a time have they fought against me from my youth up, *
      may Israel now say;
Yea, many a time have they vexed me from my youth up; *
but they have not prevailed against me.
The plowers plowed upon my back, *
      and made long furrows.
   But the righteous LORD *
hath hewn the snares of the ungodly in pieces.
Let them be confounded and turned backward, *
as many as have evil will at Sion.
Let them be even as the grass upon the housetops, *
      which withereth afore it be grown up;
Whereof the mower filleth not his hand, *
neither he that bindeth up the sheaves his bosom.
So that they who go by say not so much as, The LORD prosper you; *
we wish you good luck in the Name of the LORD.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The LORD prosper you.

Psalm 130 De profundis

LORD hear my voice, O let thine ears consider well the voice of my complaint.

OUT of the deep have I called unto thee, O LORD; *
      Lord, hear my voice.
O let thine ears consider well *
      the voice of my complaint.
If thou, LORD, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss, *
O Lord, who may abide it?
For there is mercy with thee; *
      therefore shalt thou be feared.
I look for the LORD; my soul doth wait for him; *
in his word is my trust.
My soul fleeth unto the Lord before the morning watch; *
I say, before the morning watch.
O Israel, trust in the LORD; for with the LORD there is mercy, *
and with him is plenteous redemption.
And he shall redeem Israel *
      from all his sins.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

LORD hear my voice, O let thine ears consider well the voice of my complaint.

Psalm 128 Beati omnes

Happy are they all who fear the LORD, and who follow in his ways!

Happy are they all who fear the LORD, *
and who follow in his ways!
You shall eat the fruit of your labor; *
happiness and prosperity shall be yours.
Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine within your house, *
your children like olive shoots round about your table.
The man who fears the LORD *
      shall thus indeed be blessed.
The LORD bless you from Zion, *
and may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life.
May you live to see your children's children; *
      may peace be upon Israel.

Amen.

Happy are they all who fear the LORD, and who follow in his ways!

Psalm 129 Sæpe expugnaverunt

The LORD prosper you.

Greatly have they oppressed me since my youth, *
      let Israel now say;
Greatly have they oppressed me since my youth", *
but they have not prevailed against me."
The plowmen plowed upon my back *
      and made their furrows long.
The LORD, the Righteous One, *
has cut the cords of the wicked.
Let them be put to shame and thrown back, *
all those who are enemies of Zion.
Let them be like grass upon the housetops, *
      which withers before it can be plucked;
Which does not fill the hand of the reaper, *
      nor the bosom of him who binds the sheaves;
So that those who go by say not so much as, "The LORD prosper you. *
We wish you well in the Name of the LORD."

Amen.

The LORD prosper you.

Psalm 130 De profundis

LORD, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.

Out of the depths have I called to you, O LORD; LORD, hear my voice; *
let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.
If you, LORD, were to note what is done amiss, *
      O LORD, who could stand?
For there is forgiveness with you; *
      therefore you shall be feared.
I wait for the LORD; my soul waits for him; *
in his word is my hope.
My soul waits for the LORD, more than watchmen for the morning, *
more than watchmen for the morning.
O Israel, wait for the LORD, *
      for with the LORD there is mercy;
With him there is plenteous redemption, *
and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

Amen.

LORD, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.

The Lessons

A Reading from 2 Kings 22:14-23:3

So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asahiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college;) and they communed with her. And she said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read: Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched. But to the king of Judah which sent you to enquire of the LORD, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, As touching the words which thou hast heard; Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD. Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again. And the king sent, and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem. And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD. And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

So Hilki'ah the priest, and Ahi'kam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asai'ah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter); and they talked with her. And she said to them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: `Tell the man who sent you to me, Thus says the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read. Because they have forsaken me and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath will be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched. But as to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, thus shall you say to him, Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Regarding the words which you have heard, because your heart was penitent, and you humbled yourself before the LORD, when you heard how I spoke against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and you have rent your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, says the LORD. Therefore, behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place.'" And they brought back word to the king. Then the king sent, and all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem were gathered to him. And the king went up to the house of the LORD, and with him all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests and the prophets, all the people, both small and great; and he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of the LORD. And the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book; and all the people joined in the covenant.

So the priest Hilkiah, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to the prophetess Huldah the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe; she resided in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter, where they consulted her. She declared to them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Tell the man who sent you to me, Thus says the LORD, I will indeed bring disaster on this place and on its inhabitants-- all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read. Because they have abandoned me and have made offerings to other gods, so that they have provoked me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath will be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched. But as to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, thus shall you say to him, Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Regarding the words that you have heard, because your heart was penitent, and you humbled yourself before the LORD, when you heard how I spoke against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and because you have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, says the LORD. Therefore, I will gather you to your ancestors, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace; your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring on this place." They took the message back to the king. Then the king directed that all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem should be gathered to him. The king went up to the house of the LORD, and with him went all the people of Judah, all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests, the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD. The king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the LORD, to follow the LORD, keeping his commandments, his decrees, and his statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. All the people joined in the covenant.

The Song of Mary Magnificat
Luke 1:46-55

My soul doth magnify the Lord, *
and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.
For he hath regarded *
the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold from henceforth *
all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me, *
and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him *
throughout all generations.
He hath showed strength with his arm; *
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, *
and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things, *
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, *
as he promised to our forefathers,
Abraham and his seed for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

A Reading from Luke 7:18-35

And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things. And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him. And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like? They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil. The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! But wisdom is justified of all her children.

The disciples of John told him of all these things. And John, calling to him two of his disciples, sent them to the Lord, saying, "Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?" And when the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, `Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?'" In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many that were blind he bestowed sight. And he answered them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is he who takes no offense at me." When the messengers of John had gone, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings' courts. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written, `Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.' I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." (When they heard this all the people and the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John; but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.) "To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the market place and calling to one another, `We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep.' For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine; and you say, `He has a demon.' The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by all her children."

The disciples of John reported all these things to him. So John summoned two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord to ask, "Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?" When the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, 'Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?'" Jesus had just then cured many people of diseases, plagues, and evil spirits, and had given sight to many who were blind. And he answered them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me." When John's messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who put on fine clothing and live in luxury are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written, 'See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." (And all the people who heard this, including the tax collectors, acknowledged the justice of God, because they had been baptized with John's baptism. But by refusing to be baptized by him, the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God's purpose for themselves.) "To what then will I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep.' For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, 'He has a demon'; the Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Nevertheless, wisdom is vindicated by all her children."

Collect of the Day

Almighty and everlasting God, who art always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than either we desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of thy mercy, forgiving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Hymn: Ales Diei Nuntius

Meter: LM

The wingéd herald of the day
Proclaims the morn's approaching ray:
And Christ the Lord our souls excites,
And so to endless life invites.

Take up thy bed, to each He cries,
Who sick or wrapped in slumber lies;
And chaste and just and sober stand
And watch: My coming is at hand.

With earnest cry, with tearful care,
Call we the Lord to hear our prayer;
While supplication, pure and deep,
Forbids each chastened heart to sleep.

Do Thou, O Christ, our slumber wake:
Do Thou the chains of darkness break;
Purge Thou our former sins away,
And in our souls new light display.

All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, eternal Son, to Thee;
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.

V. Let my prayer, O Lord, be set forth.
R. In thy sight as incense.

For All Sorts and Conditions [A form of general intercession] [+][-]

O God, the creator and preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially we pray for thy holy Church universal; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are in any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [especially those for whom our prayers are desired]; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

The General Thanksgiving [+][-]

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we thine unworthy servants
do give thee most humble and hearty thanks
for all thy goodness and loving kindness
to us and to all men.
We bless thee for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for thine inestimable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ,
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.

And, we beseech thee,
give us that due sense of all thy mercies,
that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful;
and that we show forth thy praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to thy service,
and by walking before thee
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost,
be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.

And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,
and by walking before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom [+][-]

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy well beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14

Post-Office Marian Antiphon [+][-]

Salve Regina

Hail holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness,
and our hope.To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this
valley of tears.Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of
mercy toward us. And after this our exile show unto us
the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement
O loving
O sweet Virgin Mary

V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
R.That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:
Almighty, everlasting God, who by the cooperation of the Holy Spirit, didst prepare the body and soul of the glorious Virgin-Mother Mary to become a worthy dwelling for Thy Son; grant that we who rejoice in her commemoration may, by her loving intercession, be delivered from present evils and from the everlasting death. Amen.

V. May the divine help remain with us always.
R. And with our absent brothers and sisters. Amen.

Salve Regina

Mary, we hail you, Mother and Queen compassionate;
Mary, most humble, great and pure, we hail you.
To you we exiles, children of Eve lift our voices.
To you we sing praises, because by the Spirit, you brought
forth to us the Savior.
Turn now, therefore, O our intercessor, your eyes of pity and lovingkindness upon us sinners.
Then at the last, when our earthly journey has been ended, show us Jesus, the blessed fruit of your womb.
O gentle
O tender
O gracious Virgin Mary

V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
R.That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:
Almighty and everlasting God, who by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, prepared the body and soul of the glorious Virgin Mary to become a habitation for your Son: Grant that, as we rejoice in her obedience, we may have the support of her loving intercession, and may be delivered from our present evils and eternal death; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

V. May the divine help remain with us always.
R. And with our absent brothers and sisters. Amen.
