Seek him that made the Pleides and Orion, that turneth deep darkness into the morning, and darkeneth the day into night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his Name. Amos 5:8

Seek him who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns deep darkness into the morning, and darkens the day into night; who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the surface of the earth: The Lord is his name. Amos 5:8

Confession of Sin [+][-]

Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, so that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence may be kept.

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence may be kept.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

The Psalm or Psalms Appointed

Psalm 53 Dixit insipiens

For the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it, Alleluia, Alleluia.

THE foolish body hath said in his heart, *
      There is no God.
Corrupt are they, and become abominable in their wickedness; *
there is none that doeth good.
God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, *
to see if there were any that would understand, and seek after God.
But they are all gone out of the way, they are altogether become abominable; *
there is also none that doeth good, no not one.
Are not they without understanding that work wickedness, *
eating up my people as if they would eat bread? they have not called upon God.
They were afraid where no fear was; *
for God hath broken the bones of him that besieged thee; thou hast put them to confusion, because God hath despised them.
O that the salvation were given unto Israel out of Sion! *
O that the Lord would deliver his people out of captivity!
   Then should Jacob rejoice, *
and Israel should be right glad.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

For the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Psalm 54 Deus, in nomine

And, behold, there was a great earthquake : for the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven. Alleluia.

SAVE me, O God, for thy Name's sake, *
and avenge me in thy strength.
Hear my prayer, O God, *
and hearken unto the words of my mouth.
For strangers are risen up against me; *
and tyrants, which have not God before their eyes, seek after my soul.
Behold, God is my helper; *
the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.
He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: *
destroy thou them in thy truth.
An offering of a free heart will I give thee, and praise thy Name, O LORD; *
      because it is so comfortable.
For he hath delivered me out of all my trouble; *
and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

And, behold, there was a great earthquake : for the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven. Alleluia.

Psalm 55 Exaudi, Deus

And his countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. Alleluia, Alleluia.

HEAR my prayer, O God, *
and hide not thyself from my petition.
Take heed unto me, and hear me, *
      how I mourn in my prayer, and am vexed;
The enemy crieth so, and the ungodly cometh on so fast; *
for they are minded to do me some mischief, so maliciously are they set against me.
My heart is disquieted within me, *
and the fear of death is fallen upon me.
Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, *
and an horrible dread hath overwhelmed me.
   And I said, O that I had wings like a dove! *
for then would I flee away, and be at rest.
Lo, then would I get me away far off, *
      and remain in the wilderness.
I would make haste to escape, *
because of the stormy wind and tempest.
Destroy their tongues, O Lord, and divide them; *
for I have spied unrighteousness and strife in the city.
10    Day and night they go about within the walls thereof: *
mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.
11    Wickedness is therein; *
deceit and guile go not out of her streets.
12    For it is not an open enemy that hath done me this dishonour; *
      for then I could have borne it;
13    Neither was it mine adversary that did magnify himself against me; *
      for then peradventure I would have hid myself from him;
14    But it was even thou, my companion, *
my guide, and mine own familiar friend.
15    We took sweet counsel together, *
and walked in the house of God as friends.
16    Let death come hastily upon them, and let them go down alive into the pit; *
for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
17    As for me, I will call upon God, *
and the LORD shall save me.
18    In the evening, and morning, and at noon-day will I pray, and that instantly; *
and he shall hear my voice.
19    It is he that hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me; *
for there were many that strove with me.
20    Yea, even God, that endureth for ever, shall hear me, and bring them down; *
for they will not turn, nor fear God.
21    He laid his hands upon such as be at peace with him, *
      and he brake his covenant.
22    The words of his mouth were softer than butter, having war in his heart; *
his words were smoother than oil, and yet be they very swords.
23    O cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall nourish thee, *
and shall not suffer the righteous to fall for ever.
24    And as for them, *
thou, O God, shalt bring them into the pit of destruction.
25    The blood-thirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days: *
nevertheless, my trust shall be in thee, O Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

And his countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. Alleluia, Alleluia.

Psalm 53 Dixit insipiens

For the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it, Alleluia, Alleluia.

For the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it, Alleluia, Alleluia.

The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." *
All are corrupt and commit abominable acts; there is none who does any good.
God looks down from heaven upon us all, *
to see if there is any who is wise, if there is one who seeks after God.
Every one has proved faithless; all alike have turned bad; *
there is none who does good; no, not one.
Have they no knowledge, those evildoers *
who eat up my people like bread and do not call upon God?
See how greatly they tremble, such trembling as never was; *
for God has scattered the bones of the enemy; they are put to shame, because God has rejected them.
Oh, that Israel's deliverance would come out of Zion! *
when God restores the fortunes of his people Jacob will rejoice and Israel be glad.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:*
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

For the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it, Alleluia, Alleluia.

For the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Psalm 54 Deus, in nomine

And, behold, there was a great earthquake : for the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven. Alleluia.

And, behold, there was a great earthquake : for the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven. Alleluia.

Save me, O God, by your Name; *
in your might, defend my cause.
Hear my prayer, O God; *
give ear to the words of my mouth.
For the arrogant have risen up against me, and the ruthless have sought my life, *
those who have no regard for God.
Behold, God is my helper; *
it is the Lord who sustains my life.
Render evil to those who spy on me; *
      in your faithfulness, destroy them.
I will offer you a freewill sacrifice *
and praise your Name, O LORD, for it is good.
For you have rescued me from every trouble, *
and my eye has seen the ruin of my foes.

Amen.

And, behold, there was a great earthquake : for the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven. Alleluia.

And, behold, there was a great earthquake : for the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven. Alleluia.

Psalm 55 Exaudi, Deus

And his countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. Alleluia, Alleluia.

And his countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. Alleluia, Alleluia.

Hear my prayer, O God; *
do not hide yourself from my petition.
Listen to me and answer me; *
I have no peace, because of my cares.
I am shaken by the noise of the enemy *
      and by the pressure of the wicked;
For they have cast an evil spell upon me *
and are set against me in fury.
My heart quakes within me, *
and the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
Fear and trembling have come over me, *
      and horror overwhelms me.
And I said, "Oh, that I had wings like a dove! *
I would fly away and be at rest.
  I would flee to a far-off place *
and make my lodging in the wilderness.
I would hasten to escape *
from the stormy wind and tempest."
10   Swallow them up, O Lord; confound their speech; *
for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
11   Day and night the watchmen make their rounds upon her walls, *
but trouble and misery are in the midst of her.
12   There is corruption at her heart; *
her streets are never free of oppression and deceit.
13   For had it been an adversary who taunted me, then I could have borne it; *
or had it been an enemy who vaunted himself against me, then I could have hidden from him.
14   But it was you, a man after my own heart, *
my companion, my own familiar friend.
15   We took sweet counsel together, *
and walked with the throng in the house of God.
16   Let death come upon them suddenly; let them go down alive to the grave; *
for wickedness is in their dwellings, in their very midst.
17   But I will call upon God, *
and the LORD will deliver me.
18   In the evening, in the morning, and at noonday, I will complain and lament, *
and he will hear my voice.
19   He will bring me safely back from the battle waged against me; *
for there are many who fight me.
20   God, who is enthroned of old, will hear me and bring them down; *
they never change; they do not fear God.
21   My companion stretched forth his hand against his comrade; *
      he has broken his covenant.
22   His speech is softer than butter, *
but war is in his heart.
23   His words are smoother than oil, *
      but they are drawn swords.
24   Cast your burden upon the LORD, and he will sustain you; *
he will never let the righteous stumble.
25   For you will bring the bloodthirsty and deceitful *
down to the pit of destruction, O God.
26   They shall not live out half their days, *
but I will put my trust in you.

Amen.

And his countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. Alleluia, Alleluia.

Psalm 118 Confitemini Domino

For the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it, Alleluia, Alleluia.

O GIVE thanks unto the LORD, for he is gracious; *
because his mercy endureth for ever.
Let Israel now confess that he is gracious, *
and that his mercy endureth for ever.
Let the house of Aaron now confess, *
that his mercy endureth for ever.
Yea, let them now that fear the LORD confess, *
that his mercy endureth for ever.
I called upon the LORD in trouble; *
and the LORD heard me at large.
The LORD is on my side; *
I will not fear what man doeth unto me.
The LORD taketh my part with them that help me; *
therefore shall I see my desire upon mine enemies.
It is better to trust in the LORD, *
than to put any confidence in man.
It is better to trust in the LORD, *
than to put any confidence in princes.
10    All nations compassed me round about; *
but in the Name of the LORD will I destroy them.
11    They kept me in on every side, they kept me in, I say, on every side; *
but in the Name of the LORD will I destroy them.
12    They came about me like bees, and are extinct even as the fire among the thorns; *
for in the Name of the LORD I will destroy them.
13    Thou hast thrust sore at me, that I might fall; *
but the LORD was my help.
14    The LORD is my strength, and my song; *
      and is become my salvation.
15    The voice of joy and health is in the dwellings of the righteous; *
the right hand of the LORD bringeth mighty things to pass.
16    The right hand of the LORD hath the preeminence; *
the right hand of the LORD bringeth mighty things to pass.
17    I shall not die, but live, *
and declare the works of the LORD.
18    The LORD hath chastened and corrected me; *
but he hath not given me over unto death.
19    Open me the gates of righteousness, *
that I may go into them, and give thanks unto the LORD.
20    This is the gate of the LORD, *
the righteous shall enter into it.
21    I will thank thee; for thou hast heard me, *
      and art become my salvation.
22    The same stone which the builders refused, *
is become the head-stone in the corner.
23    This is the LORD's doing, *
and it is marvellous in our eyes.
24    This is the day which the LORD hath made; *
we will rejoice and be glad in it.
25    Help me now, O LORD: *
O LORD, send us now prosperity.
26    Blessed be he that cometh in the Name of the LORD: *
we have wished you good luck, we that are of the house of the LORD.
27    God is the LORD, who hath showed us light: *
bind the sacrifice with cords, yea, even unto the horns of the altar.
28    Thou art my God, and I will thank thee; *
thou art my God, and I will praise thee.
29    O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is gracious, *
and his mercy endureth for ever.

Psalm 118 Confitemini Domino

For the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; *
      his mercy endures for ever.
  Let Israel now proclaim, *
      "His mercy endures for ever."
Let the house of Aaron now proclaim, *
      "His mercy endures for ever."
Let those who fear the LORD now proclaim, *
      "His mercy endures for ever."
I called to the LORD in my distress; *
the LORD answered by setting me free.
The LORD is at my side, therefore I will not fear; *
what can anyone do to me?
The LORD is at my side to help me; *
I will triumph over those who hate me.
It is better to rely on the LORD *
than to put any trust in flesh.
It is better to rely on the LORD *
than to put any trust in rulers.
10   All the ungodly encompass me; *
in the Name of the LORD I will repel them.
11   They hem me in, they hem me in on every side; *
in the name of the LORD I will repel them.
12   They swarm about me like bees; they blaze like a fire of thorns; *
in the name of the LORD I will repel them.
13   I was pressed so hard that I almost fell, *
but the LORD came to my help.
14   The LORD is my strength and my song, *
and he has become my salvation.
15   There is a sound of exultation and victory *
in the tents of the righteous:
16   The right hand of the LORD has triumphed! *
the right hand of the LORD is exalted! the right hand of the LORD has triumphed!
17   I shall not die, but live, *
and declare the works of the LORD.
18   The LORD has punished me sorely, *
but he did not hand me over to death.
19   Open for me the gates of righteousness; *
I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the LORD.
20   This is the gate of the LORD; *
he who is righteous may enter.
21   I will give thanks to you, for you answered me *
      and have become my salvation.
22   The same stone which the builders rejected *
      has become the chief cornerstone.
23   This is the LORD'S doing, *
and it is marvelous in our eyes.
24   On this day the LORD has acted; *
we will rejoice and be glad in it.
25   Hosanna, LORD, hosanna! *
      LORD, send us now success.
26   Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; *
we bless you from the house of the LORD.
27   God is the LORD; he has shined upon us; *
form a procession with branches up to the horns of the altar.
28   You are my God, and I will thank you; *
you are my God, and I will exalt you.
29   Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; *
      his mercy endures for ever.

The Lessons

A Reading from Daniel 12:1-4, 12:13-13

And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time; but at that time your people shall be delivered, every one whose name shall be found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase. But go your way till the end; and you shall rest, and shall stand in your allotted place at the end of the days."

"At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. But you, Daniel, keep the words secret and the book sealed until the time of the end. Many shall be running back and forth, and evil shall increase." But you, go your way, and rest; you shall rise for your reward at the end of the days."

Here ends the Reading.

The Song of Mary Magnificat
Luke 1:46-55

My soul doth magnify the Lord, *
and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.
For he hath regarded *
the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold from henceforth *
all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me, *
and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him *

He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, *

Abraham and his seed for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *

A Reading from Luke 24:1-12

Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. And they remembered his words, And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Mag'dalene and Jo-an'na and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told this to the apostles; but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.

Hymn: Lux Ecce Surgit Aurea

Meter: LM

Lo! golden light rekindles day:
Let paling darkness steal away,
Which all too long o'erwhelmed our gaze
And led our steps by winding ways.

We pray Thee, rising Light serene,
E'en as Thyself our hearts make clean;
Let no deceit our lips defile,
Nor let our souls be vexed by guile.

O keep us, as the hours proceed,
From lying word and evil deed;
Our roving eyes from sin set free,
Our body from impurity.

For Thou dost from above survey
The converse of each fleeting day;
Thou dost foresee from morning light
Our every deed, until the night.

All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, eternal Son, to Thee;
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.

For All Sorts and Conditions [A form of general intercession] [+][-]

O God, the creator and preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially we pray for thy holy Church universal; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are in any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [especially those for whom our prayers are desired]; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.
