Confession of Sin [+][-]

Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, so that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence may be kept.

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence may be kept.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

The Psalm or Psalms Appointed

Psalm 53 Dixit insipiens

Then should Jacob rejoice and Israel should be right glad.

THE foolish body hath said in his heart, *
      There is no God.
Corrupt are they, and become abominable in their wickedness; *
there is none that doeth good.
God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, *
to see if there were any that would understand, and seek after God.
But they are all gone out of the way, they are altogether become abominable; *
there is also none that doeth good, no not one.
Are not they without understanding that work wickedness, *
eating up my people as if they would eat bread? they have not called upon God.
They were afraid where no fear was; *
for God hath broken the bones of him that besieged thee; thou hast put them to confusion, because God hath despised them.
O that the salvation were given unto Israel out of Sion! *
O that the Lord would deliver his people out of captivity!
   Then should Jacob rejoice, *
and Israel should be right glad.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Then should Jacob rejoice and Israel should be right glad.

Psalm 54 Deus, in nomine

Hear my prayer, O God, and hearken unto the words of my mouth.

SAVE me, O God, for thy Name's sake, *
and avenge me in thy strength.
Hear my prayer, O God, *
and hearken unto the words of my mouth.
For strangers are risen up against me; *
and tyrants, which have not God before their eyes, seek after my soul.
Behold, God is my helper; *
the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.
He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: *
destroy thou them in thy truth.
An offering of a free heart will I give thee, and praise thy Name, O LORD; *
      because it is so comfortable.
For he hath delivered me out of all my trouble; *
and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Hear my prayer, O God, and hearken unto the words of my mouth.

Psalm 55 Exaudi, Deus

Take heed unto me.

HEAR my prayer, O God, *
and hide not thyself from my petition.
Take heed unto me, and hear me, *
      how I mourn in my prayer, and am vexed;
The enemy crieth so, and the ungodly cometh on so fast; *
for they are minded to do me some mischief, so maliciously are they set against me.
My heart is disquieted within me, *
and the fear of death is fallen upon me.
Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, *
and an horrible dread hath overwhelmed me.
   And I said, O that I had wings like a dove! *
for then would I flee away, and be at rest.
Lo, then would I get me away far off, *
      and remain in the wilderness.
I would make haste to escape, *
because of the stormy wind and tempest.
Destroy their tongues, O Lord, and divide them; *
for I have spied unrighteousness and strife in the city.
10    Day and night they go about within the walls thereof: *
mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.
11    Wickedness is therein; *
deceit and guile go not out of her streets.
12    For it is not an open enemy that hath done me this dishonour; *
      for then I could have borne it;
13    Neither was it mine adversary that did magnify himself against me; *
      for then peradventure I would have hid myself from him;
14    But it was even thou, my companion, *
my guide, and mine own familiar friend.
15    We took sweet counsel together, *
and walked in the house of God as friends.
16    Let death come hastily upon them, and let them go down alive into the pit; *
for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
17    As for me, I will call upon God, *
and the LORD shall save me.
18    In the evening, and morning, and at noon-day will I pray, and that instantly; *
and he shall hear my voice.
19    It is he that hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me; *
for there were many that strove with me.
20    Yea, even God, that endureth for ever, shall hear me, and bring them down; *
for they will not turn, nor fear God.
21    He laid his hands upon such as be at peace with him, *
      and he brake his covenant.
22    The words of his mouth were softer than butter, having war in his heart; *
his words were smoother than oil, and yet be they very swords.
23    O cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall nourish thee, *
and shall not suffer the righteous to fall for ever.
24    And as for them, *
thou, O God, shalt bring them into the pit of destruction.
25    The blood-thirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days: *
nevertheless, my trust shall be in thee, O Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Take heed unto me.

Psalm 53 Dixit insipiens

Then should Jacob rejoice and Israel should be right glad.

Jacob will rejoice and Israel be glad.

The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." *
All are corrupt and commit abominable acts; there is none who does any good.
God looks down from heaven upon us all, *
to see if there is any who is wise, if there is one who seeks after God.
Every one has proved faithless; all alike have turned bad; *
there is none who does good; no, not one.
Have they no knowledge, those evildoers *
who eat up my people like bread and do not call upon God?
See how greatly they tremble, such trembling as never was; *
for God has scattered the bones of the enemy; they are put to shame, because God has rejected them.
Oh, that Israel's deliverance would come out of Zion! *
when God restores the fortunes of his people Jacob will rejoice and Israel be glad.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:*
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Then should Jacob rejoice and Israel should be right glad.

Jacob will rejoice and Israel be glad.

Psalm 54 Deus, in nomine

Hear my prayer, O God, and hearken unto the words of my mouth.

Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.

Save me, O God, by your Name; *
in your might, defend my cause.
Hear my prayer, O God; *
give ear to the words of my mouth.
For the arrogant have risen up against me, and the ruthless have sought my life, *
those who have no regard for God.
Behold, God is my helper; *
it is the Lord who sustains my life.
Render evil to those who spy on me; *
      in your faithfulness, destroy them.
I will offer you a freewill sacrifice *
and praise your Name, O LORD, for it is good.
For you have rescued me from every trouble, *
and my eye has seen the ruin of my foes.

Amen.

Hear my prayer, O God, and hearken unto the words of my mouth.

Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.

Psalm 55 Exaudi, Deus

Take heed unto me.

Hear my prayer, O God.

Hear my prayer, O God; *
do not hide yourself from my petition.
Listen to me and answer me; *
I have no peace, because of my cares.
I am shaken by the noise of the enemy *
      and by the pressure of the wicked;
For they have cast an evil spell upon me *
and are set against me in fury.
My heart quakes within me, *
and the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
Fear and trembling have come over me, *
      and horror overwhelms me.
And I said, "Oh, that I had wings like a dove! *
I would fly away and be at rest.
  I would flee to a far-off place *
and make my lodging in the wilderness.
I would hasten to escape *
from the stormy wind and tempest."
10   Swallow them up, O Lord; confound their speech; *
for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
11   Day and night the watchmen make their rounds upon her walls, *
but trouble and misery are in the midst of her.
12   There is corruption at her heart; *
her streets are never free of oppression and deceit.
13   For had it been an adversary who taunted me, then I could have borne it; *
or had it been an enemy who vaunted himself against me, then I could have hidden from him.
14   But it was you, a man after my own heart, *
my companion, my own familiar friend.
15   We took sweet counsel together, *
and walked with the throng in the house of God.
16   Let death come upon them suddenly; let them go down alive to the grave; *
for wickedness is in their dwellings, in their very midst.
17   But I will call upon God, *
and the LORD will deliver me.
18   In the evening, in the morning, and at noonday, I will complain and lament, *
and he will hear my voice.
19   He will bring me safely back from the battle waged against me; *
for there are many who fight me.
20   God, who is enthroned of old, will hear me and bring them down; *
they never change; they do not fear God.
21   My companion stretched forth his hand against his comrade; *
      he has broken his covenant.
22   His speech is softer than butter, *
but war is in his heart.
23   His words are smoother than oil, *
      but they are drawn swords.
24   Cast your burden upon the LORD, and he will sustain you; *
he will never let the righteous stumble.
25   For you will bring the bloodthirsty and deceitful *
down to the pit of destruction, O God.
26   They shall not live out half their days, *
but I will put my trust in you.

Amen.

Take heed unto me.

Hear my prayer, O God.

Psalm 141 Domine, clamavi

Let my prayer be set forth in thy sight as the incense.

LORD, I call upon thee; haste thee unto me, *
and consider my voice, when I cry unto thee.
Let my prayer be set forth in thy sight as the incense; *
and let the lifting up of my hands be an evening sacrifice.
Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth, *
and keep the door of my lips.
O let not mine heart be inclined to any evil thing; *
let me not be occupied in ungodly works with the men that work wickedness, neither let me eat of such things as please them.
Let the righteous rather smite me friendly, and reprove me; *
yea, let not my head refuse their precious balms.
   As for the ungodly, *
I will pray yet against their wickedness.
Let their judges be overthrown in stony places, *
that they may hear my words; for they are sweet.
Our bones lie scattered before the pit, *
like as when one breaketh and heweth wood upon the earth.
But mine eyes look unto thee, O LORD God; *
in thee is my trust; O cast not out my soul.
10    Keep me from the snare that they have laid for me, *
and from the traps of the wicked doers.
11    Let the ungodly fall into their own nets together, *
and let me ever escape them.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Let my prayer be set forth in thy sight as the incense.

Psalm 143 Domine, exaudi

Enter not into judgement with thy servant for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

HEAR my prayer, O LORD, and consider my desire; *
hearken unto me for thy truth and righteousness' sake.
And enter not into judgment with thy servant; *
for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.
For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; *
he hath laid me in the darkness, as the men that have been long dead.
Therefore is my spirit vexed within me, *
and my heart within me is desolate.
Yet do I remember the time past; I muse upon all thy works; *
yea, I exercise myself in the works of thy hands.
I stretch forth my hands unto thee; *
my soul gaspeth unto thee as a thirsty land.
Hear me, O LORD, and that soon; for my spirit waxeth faint: *
hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.
O let me hear thy loving-kindness betimes in the morning; for in thee is my trust: *
show thou me the way that I should walk in; for I lift up my soul unto thee.
Deliver me, O LORD, from mine enemies; *
for I flee unto thee to hide me.
10    Teach me to do the thing that pleaseth thee; for thou art my God: *
let thy loving Spirit lead me forth into the land of righteousness.
11    Quicken me, O LORD, for thy Name's sake; *
and for thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble.
12    And of thy goodness slay mine enemies, *
and destroy all them that vex my soul; for I am thy servant.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Enter not into judgement with thy servant for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

Psalm 141 Domine, clamavi

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as incense.

O LORD, I call to you; come to me quickly; *
hear my voice when I cry to you.
Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as incense, *
the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
Set a watch before my mouth, O LORD, and guard the door of my lips; *
let not my heart incline to any evil thing.
Let me not be occupied in wickedness with evildoers, *
nor eat of their choice foods.
Let the righteous smite me in friendly rebuke; let not the oil of the unrighteous anoint my head; *
for my prayer is continually against their wicked deeds.
Let their rulers be overthrown in stony places, *
that they may know my words are true.
As when a plowman turns over the earth in furrows, *
let their bones be scattered at the mouth of the grave.
But my eyes are turned to you, Lord GOD; *
in you I take refuge; do not strip me of my life.
Protect me from the snare which they have laid for me *
and from the traps of the evildoers.
10   Let the wicked fall into their own nets, *
      while I myself escape.

Amen.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as incense.

Psalm 143 Domine, exaudi

Enter not into judgment with your servant, for in your sight shall no one living be justified.

LORD, hear my prayer, and in your faithfulness heed my supplications; *
      answer me in your righteousness.
Enter not into judgment with your servant, *
for in your sight shall no one living be justified.
For my enemy has sought my life; he has crushed me to the ground; *
he has made me live in dark places like those who are long dead.
My spirit faints within me; *
my heart within me is desolate.
I remember the time past; I muse upon all your deeds; *
I consider the works of your hands.
I spread out my hands to you; *
my soul gasps to you like a thirsty land.
O LORD, make haste to answer me; my spirit fails me; *
do not hide your face from me or I shall be like those who go down to the Pit.
Let me hear of your loving-kindness in the morning, for I put my trust in you; *
show me the road that I must walk, for I lift up my soul to you.
Deliver me from my enemies, O LORD, *
for I flee to you for refuge.
10   Teach me to do what pleases you, for you are my God; *
let your good Spirit lead me on level ground.
11   Revive me, O LORD, for your Name's sake; *
for your righteousness' sake, bring me out of trouble.
12   Of your goodness, destroy my enemies and bring all my foes to naught, *
for truly I am your servant.

Amen.

Enter not into judgment with your servant, for in your sight shall no one living be justified.

The Lessons

A Reading from Micah 3:9-4:5

Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity. They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us. Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest. But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it. For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever.

Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who abhor justice and pervert all equity, who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with wrong. Its heads give judgment for a bribe, its priests teach for hire, its prophets divine for money; yet they lean upon the LORD and say, "Is not the LORD in the midst of us? No evil shall come upon us." Therefore because of you Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height. It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised up above the hills; and peoples shall flow to it, and many nations shall come, and say: "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and we may walk in his paths." For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between many peoples, and shall decide for strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more; but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and none shall make them afraid; for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken. For all the peoples walk each in the name of its god, but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever.

Hear this, you rulers of the house of Jacob and chiefs of the house of Israel, who abhor justice and pervert all equity, who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with wrong! Its rulers give judgment for a bribe, its priests teach for a price, its prophets give oracles for money; yet they lean upon the LORD and say, "Surely the LORD is with us! No harm shall come upon us." Therefore because of you Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height. In days to come the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised up above the hills. Peoples shall stream to it, and many nations shall come and say: "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths." For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between many peoples, and shall arbitrate between strong nations far away; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more; but they shall all sit under their own vines and under their own fig trees, and no one shall make them afraid; for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken. For all the peoples walk, each in the name of its god, but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God forever and ever.

Here ends the Reading.

Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; *
on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.
Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you, beholding the depths; *
in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.

Luke 1:46-55

My soul doth magnify the Lord, *
and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.
For he hath regarded *
the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold from henceforth *
all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me, *
and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him *
throughout all generations.
He hath showed strength with his arm; *
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, *
and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things, *
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, *
as he promised to our forefathers,
Abraham and his seed for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

He has mercy on those who fear him *
in every generation.

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, *
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things, *

A Reading from Matthew 9:27-34

And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us. And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country. As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.

And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away and spread his fame through all that district. As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons."

As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, crying loudly, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith let it be done to you." And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus sternly ordered them, "See that no one knows of this." But they went away and spread the news about him throughout that district. After they had gone away, a demoniac who was mute was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the one who had been mute spoke; and the crowds were amazed and said, "Never has anything like this been seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "By the ruler of the demons he casts out the demons."

Collect of the Day

Almighty and everlasting God, who art always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than either we desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of thy mercy, forgiving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Hymn: Lux Ecce Surgit Aurea

Meter: LM

Lo! golden light rekindles day:
Let paling darkness steal away,
Which all too long o'erwhelmed our gaze
And led our steps by winding ways.

We pray Thee, rising Light serene,
E'en as Thyself our hearts make clean;
Let no deceit our lips defile,
Nor let our souls be vexed by guile.

O keep us, as the hours proceed,
From lying word and evil deed;
Our roving eyes from sin set free,
Our body from impurity.

For Thou dost from above survey
The converse of each fleeting day;
Thou dost foresee from morning light
Our every deed, until the night.

All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, eternal Son, to Thee;
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.

V. Let my prayer, O Lord, be set forth.
R. In thy sight as incense.

O God, the creator and preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. by giving up our selves to thy service,
and by walking before thee
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
