Confession of Sin [+][-]

Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, so that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence may be kept.

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence may be kept.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

The Psalm or Psalms Appointed

Psalm 18 Part I Diligam te, Domine.

I will love thee, O LORD my strength.

I WILL love thee, O LORD, my strength. *
      The LORD is my stony rock, and my defence;
My Saviour, my God, and my might, in whom I will trust; *
my buckler, the horn also of my salvation, and my refuge.
I will call upon the LORD, which is worthy to be praised; *
so shall I be safe from mine enemies.
The sorrows of death compassed me, *
and the overflowings of ungodliness made me afraid.
The pains of hell came about me; *
the snares of death overtook me.
In my trouble I called upon the LORD, *
      and complained unto my God:
So he heard my voice out of his holy temple, *
and my complaint came before him; it entered even into his ears.
The earth trembled and quaked, *
the very foundations also of the hills shook, and were removed, because he was wroth.
There went a smoke out in his presence, *
and a consuming fire out of his mouth, so that coals were kindled at it.
10    He bowed the heavens also, and came down, *
and it was dark under his feet.
11    He rode upon the Cherubim, and did fly; *
he came flying upon the wings of the wind.
12    He made darkness his secret place, *
his pavilion round about him with dark water, and thick clouds to cover him.
13    At the brightness of his presence his clouds removed; *
      hailstones and coals of fire.
14    The LORD also thundered out of heaven, and the Highest gave his thunder; *
      hailstones and coals of fire.
15    He sent out his arrows, and scattered them; *
he cast forth lightnings, and destroyed them.
16    The springs of waters were seen, and the foundations of the round world were discovered, *
at thy chiding, O LORD, at the blasting of the breath of thy displeasure.
17    He sent down from on high to fetch me, *
and took me out of many waters.
18    He delivered me from my strongest enemy, and from them which hate me; *
for they were too mighty for me.
19    They came upon me in the day of my trouble; *
but the LORD was my upholder.
20    He brought me forth also into a place of liberty; *
he brought me forth, even because he had a favour unto me.
21    The LORD rewarded me after my righteous dealing, *
according to the cleanness of my hands did he recompense me.
22    Because I have kept the ways of the LORD, *
and have not forsaken my God, as the wicked doth.
23    For I have an eye unto all his laws, *
and will not cast out his commandments from me.
24    I was also uncorrupt before him, *
      and eschewed mine own wickedness.
25    Therefore the LORD rewarded me after my righteous dealing, *
and according unto the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.
26    With the holy thou shalt be holy, *
and with a perfect man thou shalt be perfect.
27    With the clean thou shalt be clean, *
and with the froward thou shalt be froward.
28    For thou shalt save the people that are in adversity, *
and shalt bring down the high looks of the proud.
29    Thou also shalt light my candle; *
the LORD my God shall make my darkness to be light.
30    For in thee I shall discomfit an host of men, *
and with the help of my God I shall leap over the wall.
31    The way of God is an undefiled way: *
the word of the LORD also is tried in the fire; he is the defender of all them that put their trust in him.
32    For who is God, but the LORD? *
or who hath any strength, except our God?
33    It is God that girdeth me with strength of war, *
      and maketh my way perfect.
34    He maketh my feet like harts' feet, *
and setteth me up on high.
35    He teacheth mine hands to fight, *
and mine arms shall bend even a bow of steel.
36    Thou hast given me the defence of thy salvation; *
thy right hand also shall hold me up, and thy loving correction shall make me great.
37    Thou shalt make room enough under me for to go, *
that my footsteps shall not slide.
38    I will follow upon mine enemies, and overtake them; *
neither will I turn again till I have destroyed them.
39    I will smite them, that they shall not be able to stand, *
      but fall under my feet.
40    Thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle; *
thou shalt throw down mine enemies under me.
41    Thou hast made mine enemies also to turn their backs upon me, *
and I shall destroy them that hate me.
42    They shall cry, but there shall be none to help them; *
yea, even unto the LORD shall they cry, but he shall not hear them.
43    I will beat them as small as the dust before the wind: *
I will cast them out as the clay in the streets.
44    Thou shalt deliver me from the strivings of the people, *
and thou shalt make me the head of the nations; a people whom I have not known shall serve me.
45    As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me; *
the strangers shall feign obedience unto me.
46    The strangers shall fail, *
and come trembling out of their strongholds.
47    The LORD liveth; and blessed be my strong helper, *
      and praised be the God of my salvation;
48    Even the God that seeth that I be avenged, *
and subdueth the people unto me.
49    It is he that delivereth me from my cruel enemies, and setteth me up above mine adversaries: *
thou shalt rid me from the wicked man.
50    For this cause will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the Gentiles, *
and sing praises unto thy Name.
51    Great prosperity giveth he unto his King, *
and showeth loving-kindness unto David his anointed, and unto his seed for evermore.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

I will love thee, O LORD my strength.

Psalm 18 Part I Diligam te, Domine.

I will love thee, O LORD my strength.

I love you, O LORD my strength.

I love you, O LORD my strength, *
O LORD my stronghold, my crag, and my haven.
My God, my rock in whom I put my trust, *
my shield, the horn of my salvation, and my refuge; you are worthy of praise.
I will call upon the LORD, *
and so shall I be saved from my enemies.
The breakers of death rolled over me, *
and the torrents of oblivion made me afraid.
The cords of hell entangled me, *
and the snares of death were set for me.
I called upon the LORD in my distress *
and cried out to my God for help.
He heard my voice from his heavenly dwelling; *
my cry of anguish came to his ears.
The earth reeled and rocked; *
the roots of the mountains shook; they reeled because of his anger.
Smoke rose from his nostrils and a consuming fire out of his mouth; *
hot burning coals blazed forth from him.
10   He parted the heavens and came down *
with a storm cloud under his feet.
11   He mounted on cherubim and flew; *
he swooped on the wings of the wind.
12   He wrapped darkness about him; *
he made dark waters and thick clouds his pavilion.
13   From the brightness of his presence, through the clouds, *
burst hailstones and coals of fire.
14   The LORD thundered out of heaven; *
the Most High uttered his voice.
15   He loosed his arrows and scattered them; *
he hurled thunderbolts and routed them.
16   The beds of the seas were uncovered, and the foundations of the world laid bare, *
at your battle cry, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
17   He reached down from on high and grasped me; *
he drew me out of great waters.
18   He delivered me from my strong enemies and from those who hated me; *
for they were too mighty for me.
19   They confronted me in the day of my disaster; *
but the LORD was my support.
20   He brought me out into an open place; *
he rescued me because he delighted in me.

Psalm 18:Part II Et retribuet mihi
21   The LORD rewarded me because of my righteous dealing; *
      because my hands were clean he rewarded me;
22   For I have kept the ways of the LORD *
      and have not offended against my God;
23   For all his judgments are before my eyes, *
      and his decrees I have not put away from me;
24   For I have been blameless with him *
      and have kept myself from iniquity;
25   Therefore the LORD rewarded me according to my righteous dealing, *
because of the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
26   With the faithful you show yourself faithful, O God; *
with the forthright you show yourself forthright.
27   With the pure you show yourself pure, *
but with the crooked you are wily.
28   You will save a lowly people, *
but you will humble the haughty eyes.
29   You, O LORD, are my lamp; *
my God, you make my darkness bright.
30   With you I will break down an enclosure; *
with the help of my God I will scale any wall.
31   As for God, his ways are perfect; the words of the LORD are tried in the fire; *
he is a shield to all who trust in him.
32   For who is God, but the LORD? *
who is the Rock, except our God?
33   It is God who girds me about with strength *
      and makes my way secure.
34   He makes me sure-footed like a deer *
and lets me stand firm on the heights.
35   He trains my hands for battle *
and my arms for bending even a bow of bronze.
36   You have given me your shield of victory; *
your right hand also sustains me; your loving care makes me great.
37   You lengthen my stride beneath me, *
and my ankles do not give way.
38   I pursue my enemies and overtake them; *
I will not turn back till I have destroyed them.
39   I strike them down, and they cannot rise; *
they fall defeated at my feet.
40   You have girded me with strength for the battle; *
you have cast down my adversaries beneath me; you have put my enemies to flight.
41   I destroy those who hate me; they cry out, but there is none to help them; *
they cry to the LORD, but he does not answer.
42   I beat them small like dust before the wind; *
I trample them like mud in the streets.
43   You deliver me from the strife of the peoples; *
you put me at the head of the nations.
44   A people I have not known shall serve me; no sooner shall they hear than they shall obey me; *
      strangers will cringe before me.
45   The foreign peoples will lose heart; *
they shall come trembling out of their strongholds.
46   The LORD lives! Blessed is my Rock! *
Exalted is the God of my salvation!
47   He is the God who gave me victory *
and cast down the peoples beneath me.
48   You rescued me from the fury of my enemies; you exalted me above those who rose against me; *
you saved me from my deadly foe.
49   Therefore will I extol you among the nations, O LORD, *
and sing praises to your Name.
50   He multiplies the victories of his king; *
he shows loving-kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:*
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

I will love thee, O LORD my strength.

I love you, O LORD my strength.

Psalm 107:1-32

O that men would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!

O GIVE thanks unto the LORD, for he is gracious, *
and his mercy endureth for ever.
Let them give thanks whom the LORD hath redeemed, *
      and delivered from the hand of the enemy;
And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west; *
from the north, and from the south.
They went astray in the wilderness out of the way, *
and found no city to dwell in.
   Hungry and thirsty, *
      their soul fainted in them.
So they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, *
and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them forth by the right way, *
that they might go to the city where they dwelt.
O that men would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness; *
and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!
For he satisfieth the empty soul, *
and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
10    Such as sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, *
      being fast bound in misery and iron;
11    Because they rebelled against the words of the Lord, *
      and lightly regarded the counsel of the Most Highest;
12    He also brought down their heart through heaviness: *
they fell down, and there was none to help them.
13    So when they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, *
he delivered them out of their distress.
14    For he brought them out of darkness, and out of the shadow of death, *
and brake their bonds in sunder.
15    O that men would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness; *
and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men !
16    For he hath broken the gates of brass, *
and smitten the bars of iron in sunder.
17    Foolish men are plagued for their offence, *
      and because of their wickedness.
18    Their soul abhorred all manner of meat, *
and they were even hard at death's door.
19    So when they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, *
he delivered them out of their distress.
20    He sent his word, and healed them; *
and they were saved from their destruction.
21    O that men would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness; *
and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men !
22    That they would offer unto him the sacrifice of thanksgiving, *
and tell out his works with gladness!
23    They that go down to the sea in ships, *
      and occupy their business in great waters;
24    These men see the works of the LORD, *
and his wonders in the deep.
25    For at his word the stormy wind ariseth, *
which lifteth up the waves thereof.
26    They are carried up to the heaven, and down again to the deep; *
their soul melteth away because of the trouble.
27    They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, *
and are at their wit's end.
28    So when they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, *
he delivereth them out of their distress.
29    For he maketh the storm to cease, *
so that the waves thereof are still.
30    Then are they glad, because they are at rest; *
and so he bringeth them unto the haven where they would be.
31    O that men would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness; *
and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!
32    That they would exalt him also in the congregation of the people, *
and praise him in the seat of the elders!

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O that men would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!

Psalm 107:1-32

Let them give thanks to the LORD for his mercy and the wonders he does for his children.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, *
and his mercy endures for ever.
Let all those whom the LORD has redeemed proclaim *
that he redeemed them from the hand of the foe.
He gathered them out of the lands; *
from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.
Some wandered in desert wastes; *
they found no way to a city where they might dwell.
They were hungry and thirsty; *
      their spirits languished within them.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, *
and he delivered them from their distress.
He put their feet on a straight path *
to go to a city where they might dwell.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his mercy *
and the wonders he does for his children.
For he satisfies the thirsty *
and fills the hungry with good things.
10   Some sat in darkness and deep gloom, *
      bound fast in misery and iron;
11   Because they rebelled against the words of God *
and despised the counsel of the Most High.
12   So he humbled their spirits with hard labor; *
they stumbled, and there was none to help.
13   Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, *
and he delivered them from their distress.
14   He led them out of darkness and deep gloom *
      and broke their bonds asunder.
15   Let them give thanks to the LORD for his mercy *
and the wonders he does for his children.
16   For he shatters the doors of bronze *
and breaks in two the iron bars.
17   Some were fools and took to rebellious ways; *
they were afflicted because of their sins.
18   They abhorred all manner of food *
and drew near to death's door.
19   Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, *
and he delivered them from their distress.
20   He sent forth his word and healed them *
and saved them from the grave.
21   Let them give thanks to the LORD for his mercy *
and the wonders he does for his children.
22   Let them offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving *
and tell of his acts with shouts of joy.
23   Some went down to the sea in ships *
      and plied their trade in deep waters;
24   They beheld the works of the LORD *
and his wonders in the deep.
25   Then he spoke, and a stormy wind arose, *
which tossed high the waves of the sea.
26   They mounted up to the heavens and fell back to the depths; *
their hearts melted because of their peril.
27   They reeled and staggered like drunkards *
and were at their wits' end.
28   Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, *
and he delivered them from their distress.
29   He stilled the storm to a whisper *
and quieted the waves of the sea.
30   Then were they glad because of the calm, *
and he brought them to the harbor they were bound for.
31   Let them give thanks to the LORD for his mercy *
and the wonders he does for his children.
32   Let them exalt him in the congregation of the people *
and praise him in the council of the elders.

Amen.

Let them give thanks to the LORD for his mercy and the wonders he does for his children.

The Lessons

A Reading from Hosea 10:1-15

Israel is an empty vine, he bringeth forth fruit unto himself: according to the multitude of his fruit he hath increased the altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images. Their heart is divided; now shall they be found faulty: he shall break down their altars, he shall spoil their images. For now they shall say, We have no king, because we feared not the LORD; what then should a king do to us? They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field. The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Bethaven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof that rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it. It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel. As for Samaria, her king is cut off as the foam upon the water. The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us. O Israel, thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them. It is in my desire that I should chastise them; and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall bind themselves in their two furrows. And Ephraim is as an heifer that is taught, and loveth to tread out the corn; but I passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to ride; Judah shall plow, and Jacob shall break his clods. Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men. Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon her children. So shall Bethel do unto you because of your great wickedness: in a morning shall the king of Israel utterly be cut off.

Israel is a luxuriant vine that yields its fruit. The more his fruit increased the more altars he built; as his country improved he improved his pillars. Their heart is false; now they must bear their guilt. The LORD will break down their altars, and destroy their pillars. For now they will say: "We have no king, for we fear not the LORD, and a king, what could he do for us?" They utter mere words; with empty oaths they make covenants; so judgment springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field. The inhabitants of Sama'ria tremble for the calf of Beth-a'ven. Its people shall mourn for it, and its idolatrous priests shall wail over it, over its glory which has departed from it. Yea, the thing itself shall be carried to Assyria, as tribute to the great king. E'phraim shall be put to shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his idol. Sama'ria's king shall perish, like a chip on the face of the waters. The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed. Thorn and thistle shall grow up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us, and to the hills, Fall upon us. From the days of Gib'e-ah, you have sinned, O Israel; there they have continued. Shall not war overtake them in Gib'e-ah? I will come against the wayward people to chastise them; and nations shall be gathered against them when they are chastised for their double iniquity. E'phraim was a trained heifer that loved to thresh, and I spared her fair neck; but I will put E'phraim to the yoke, Judah must plow, Jacob must harrow for himself. Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the LORD, that he may come and rain salvation upon you. You have plowed iniquity, you have reaped injustice, you have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your chariots and in the multitude of your warriors, therefore the tumult of war shall arise among your people, and all your fortresses shall be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Beth-ar'bel on the day of battle; mothers were dashed in pieces with their children. Thus it shall be done to you, O house of Israel, because of your great wickedness. In the storm the king of Israel shall be utterly cut off.

If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not listen if someone should rise from the dead.

A Song of Praise Benedictus es, Domine
Song of the Three Young Men, 29-34

Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers; *
praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou for the name of thy Majesty; *
praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou in the temple of thy holiness; *
praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou that beholdest the depths,
and dwellest between the Cherubim; *
praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou on the glorious throne of thy kingdom; *
praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou in the firmament of heaven; *
praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; *

we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; *
on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.
Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you, beholding the depths; *

Luke 1:46-55

My soul doth magnify the Lord, *
and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.
For he hath regarded *
the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold from henceforth *
all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me, *
and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him *
throughout all generations.
He hath showed strength with his arm; *
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, *
and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things, *
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, *
as he promised to our forefathers,
Abraham and his seed for ever.

A Reading from Matthew 8:1-17

When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour. And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him; and behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, if you will, you can make me clean." And he stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, "I will; be clean." And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, "See that you say nothing to any one; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to the people." As he entered Caper'na-um, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching him and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress." And he said to him, "I will come and heal him." But the centurion answered him, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, `Go,' and he goes, and to another, `Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, `Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, "Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." And to the centurion Jesus said, "Go; be it done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed at that very moment. And when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever; he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and served him. That evening they brought to him many who were possessed with demons; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick. This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, "He took our infirmities and bore our diseases."

When Jesus had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him; and there was a leper who came to him and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean." He stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, "I do choose. Be made clean!" Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Then Jesus said to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress." And he said to him, "I will come and cure him." The centurion answered, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and the slave does it." When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, "Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." And to the centurion Jesus said, "Go; let it be done for you according to your faith." And the servant was healed in that hour. When Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever; he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and began to serve him. That evening they brought to him many who were possessed with demons; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and cured all who were sick. This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah, "He took our infirmities and bore our diseases."

Hymn: Lux Ecce Surgit Aurea

Meter: LM

Lo! golden light rekindles day:
Let paling darkness steal away,
Which all too long o'erwhelmed our gaze
And led our steps by winding ways.

We pray Thee, rising Light serene,
E'en as Thyself our hearts make clean;
Let no deceit our lips defile,
Nor let our souls be vexed by guile.

O keep us, as the hours proceed,
From lying word and evil deed;
Our roving eyes from sin set free,
Our body from impurity.

For Thou dost from above survey
The converse of each fleeting day;
Thou dost foresee from morning light
Our every deed, until the night.

All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, eternal Son, to Thee;
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.

V. Let my prayer, O Lord, be set forth.
R. In thy sight as incense.

For All Sorts and Conditions [A form of general intercession] [+][-]

O God, the creator and preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially we pray for thy holy Church universal; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are in any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [especially those for whom our prayers are desired]; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

Especially, we pray for your holy Church across the world; that it may be guided and governed by your good Spirit, so that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to your fatherly goodness all those who are in any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [especially those for whom our prayers are desired]; that it may please you to comfort and relieve them according to their various needs, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we ask for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

The General Thanksgiving [+][-]

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we thine unworthy servants
do give thee most humble and hearty thanks
for all thy goodness and loving kindness
to us and to all men.
We bless thee for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for thine inestimable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ,
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.

And, we beseech thee,
give us that due sense of all thy mercies,
that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful;
and that we show forth thy praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to thy service,
and by walking before thee
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost,
be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.

And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,
and by walking before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom [+][-]

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy well beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14
