Matins for the Dead (Dirige)

Invitatory

Venite Psalm 95:1-7

The King, by whom and in whom all things live and move and have their being: O come, let us adore him.

O come, let us sing unto the Lord; *
let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *
and show ourselves glad in him with psalms.

The King, by whom and in whom all things live and move and have their being: O come, let us adore him.

For the Lord is a great God, *
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are all the corners of the earth, *
and the strength of the hills is his also.
The sea is his, and he made it, *
and his hands prepared the dry land.

The King, by whom and in whom all things live and move and have their being: O come, let us adore him.

O come, let us worship and fall down *
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is the Lord our God, *
and we are the people of his pasture
and the sheep of his hand.

The King, by whom and in whom all things live and move and have their being: O come, let us adore him.

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; *
let the whole earth stand in awe of him.
For he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth, *
and with righteousness to judge the world
and the peoples with his truth.

The King, by whom and in whom all things live and move and have their being: O come, let us adore him.

First Nocturn (Sunday/Monday/Thursday)

Psalter

Make, O LORD my God, thy way plain before my face.

Psalm 5. Verba mea auribus.

1   PONDER my words, O LORD, *
consider my meditation.
2    O hearken thou unto the voice of my calling, my King and my God: *
for unto thee will I make my prayer.
3    My voice shalt thou hear betimes, O LORD; *
early in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
4    For thou art the God that hast no pleasure in wickedness; *
neither shall any evil dwell with thee.
5    Such as be foolish shall not stand in thy sight; *
for thou hatest all them that work iniquity.
6    Thou shalt destroy them that speak lies: *
the LORD will abhor both the blood-thirsty and deceitful man.
7    But as for me, in the multitude of thy mercy I will come into thine house; *
and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
8    Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness, because of mine enemies; *
make thy way plain before my face.
9    For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; *
their inward parts are very wickedness.
10    Their throat is an open sepulchre; *
they flatter with their tongue.
11    Destroy thou them, O God; let them perish through their own imaginations; *
cast them out in the multitude of their ungodliness; for they have rebelled against thee.
12    And let all them that put their trust in thee rejoice: *
they shall ever be giving of thanks, because thou defendest them; they that love thy Name shall be joyful in thee;
13    For thou, LORD, wilt give thy blessing unto the righteous, *
and with thy favourable kindness wilt thou defend him as with a shield.

Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord
And let light perpetual shine upon them.

Make, O LORD my God, thy way plain before my face.

Turn thee, O LORD, and deliver my soul; For in death no man remembereth thee.

Psalm 6. Domine, ne in furore.

1   O LORD, rebuke me not in thine indignation, *
neither chasten me in thy displeasure.
2    Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am weak; *
O LORD, heal me, for my bones are vexed.
3    My soul also is sore troubled: *
but, LORD, how long wilt thou punish me?
4    Turn thee, O LORD, and deliver my soul; *
O save me, for thy mercy's sake.
5    For in death no man remembereth thee; *
and who will give thee thanks in the pit?
6    I am weary of my groaning; *
every night wash I my bed, and water my couch with my tears.
7    My beauty is gone for very trouble, *
and worn away because of all mine enemies.
8    Away from me, all ye that work iniquity; *
for the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping.
9    The LORD hath heard my petition; *
the LORD will receive my prayer.
10    All mine enemies shall be confounded, and sore vexed; *
they shall be turned back, and put to shame suddenly.

Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord
And let light perpetual shine upon them.

Turn thee, O LORD, and deliver my soul; For in death no man remembereth thee.

Lest he devour my soul like a lion, and tear it to pieces, while there is none to help.

Psalm 7. Domine, Deus meus.

1   O LORD my God, in thee have I put my trust: *
2    Lest he devour my soul like a lion, and tear it in pieces, *
3    O LORD my God, if I have done any such thing; *
4    If I have rewarded evil unto him that dealt friendly with me; *
5    Then let mine enemy persecute my soul, and take me; *
6    Stand up, O LORD, in thy wrath, and lift up thyself, because of the indignation of mine enemies; *
7    And so shall the congregation of the peoples come about thee: *
8    The LORD shall judge the peoples: give sentence with me, O LORD, *
9    O let the wickedness of the ungodly come to an end; *
10    For the righteous God *
11    God is a righteous Judge, strong, and patient; *
12    If a man will not turn, he will whet his sword; *
13    He hath prepared for him the instruments of death; *
14    Behold, the ungodly travaileth with iniquity; *
15    He hath graven and digged up a pit, *
16    For his travail shall come upon his own head, *
17    I will give thanks unto the LORD, according to his righteousness; *

Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord
And let light perpetual shine upon them.

Lest he devour my soul like a lion, and tear it to pieces, while there is none to help.

V. From the gate of hell.
R. Deliver their souls, O Lord

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson

(Job 7:16-21)
Let me alone; for my days are vanity. What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him? And that thou shouldest visit him every morning, and try him every moment? How long wilt thou not depart from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? I have sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself? And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

First Respond

V: For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that at the latter day he shall stand upon the earth;
R: And in my flesh I shall see God my Savior.
V. Whom I shall see for myself, and not another and mine eyes shall behold.
R: And in my flesh I shall see God my Savior.

Second Lesson

(Job 10:1-7)
My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; shew me wherefore thou contendest with me. Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked? Hast thou eyes of flesh? or seest thou as man seeth? Are thy days as the days of man? are thy years as man's days, That thou enquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin? Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand.

Second Respond

V:Thou who didst raise Lazarus, already corrupting, from the grave.
R: Grant thou them rest, O Lord, and a place of forgiveness.
V. Thou who shalt come to judge the quick and dead, and the world by fire
R: Grant thou them rest, O Lord, and a place of forgiveness.

Third Lesson

(Job 10:8-13)
Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me. Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again? Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese? Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews. Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.

Third Respond

V: Lord, when Thou comest to judge the earth, where shall I hide myself from thy countenance?
R: For I have sinned greviously in my life.
V. I am afraid of my transgressions, and am ashamed before thee : when thou comest to judgement, O condemn me not.
R: For I have sinned greviously in my life.
V: Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon them.
R: For I have sinned greviously in my life.

[Lauds continues if only one nocturn is being said]

Second Nocturn (Tuesday/Friday)

Psalter

He shall feed me in a green pasture.

Psalm 23. Dominus regit me.

1   THE LORD is my shepherd; *
therefore can I lack nothing.
2    He shall feed me in a green pasture, *
and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.
3    He shall convert my soul, *
and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness for his Name's sake.
4    Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; *
for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me.
5    Thou shalt prepare a table before me in the presence of them that trouble me; *
thou hast anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full.
6    Surely thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; *
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord
And let light perpetual shine upon them.

He shall feed me in a green pasture.

The sins and offences of my youth, remember not, O Lord.

Psalm 25. Ad te, Domine, levavi.

1   UNTO thee, O LORD, will I lift up my soul; my God, I have put my trust in thee: *
O let me not be confounded, neither let mine enemies triumph over me.
2    For all they that hope in thee shall not be ashamed; *
but such as transgress without a cause shall be put to confusion.
3    Show me thy ways, O LORD, *
and teach me thy paths.
4    Lead me forth in thy truth, and learn me: *
for thou art the God of my salvation; in thee hath been my hope all the day long.
5    Call to remembrance, O LORD, thy tender mercies, *
and thy loving-kindnesses, which have been ever of old.
6    O remember not the sins and offences of my youth; *
but according to thy mercy think thou upon me, O LORD, for thy goodness.
7    Gracious and righteous is the LORD; *
therefore, will he teach sinners in the way.
8    Them that are meek shall he guide in judgment; *
and such as are gentle, them shall he learn his way.
9    All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth, *
unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
10    For thy Name's sake, O LORD, *
be merciful unto my sin; for it is great.
11    What man is he that feareth the LORD? *
him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.
12    His soul shall dwell at ease, *
and his seed shall inherit the land.
13    The secret of the LORD is among them that fear him; *
and he will show them his covenant.
14    Mine eyes are ever looking unto the LORD; *
for he shall pluck my feet out of the net.
15    Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; *
for I am desolate, and in misery.
16    The sorrows of my heart are enlarged: *
O bring thou me out of my troubles.
17    Look upon my adversity and misery, *
and forgive me all my sin.
18    Consider mine enemies, how many they are; *
and they bear a tyrannous hate against me.
19    O keep my soul, and deliver me: *
let me not be confounded, for I have put my trust in thee.
20    Let perfectness and righteous dealing wait upon me; *
for my hope hath been in thee.
21    Deliver Israel, O God, *
out of all his troubles.

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord
And let light perpetual shine upon them.

The sins and offences of my youth, remember not, O Lord.

I believe to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.

Psalm 27. Dominus illuminatio.

1   THE LORD is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? *
the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid?
2    When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, *
they stumbled and fell.
3    Though an host of men were laid against me, yet shall not my heart be afraid; *
and though there rose up war against me, yet will I put my trust in him.
4    One thing have I desired of the LORD, which I will require; *
even that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the fair beauty of the LORD, and to visit his temple.
5    For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his tabernacle; *
yea, in the secret place of his dwelling shall he hide me, and set me up upon a rock of stone.
6    And now shall he lift up mine head *
above mine enemies round about me.
7    Therefore will I offer in his dwelling an oblation, with great gladness: *
I will sing and speak praises unto the LORD.
8    Hearken unto my voice, O LORD, when I cry unto thee; *
have mercy upon me, and hear me.
9    My heart hath talked of thee, Seek ye my face: *
Thy face, LORD, will I seek.
10    O hide not thou thy face from me, *
nor cast thy servant away in displeasure.
11    Thou hast been my succour; *
leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.
12    When my father and my mother forsake me, *
the LORD taketh me up.
13    Teach me thy way, O LORD, *
and lead me in the right way, because of mine enemies.
14    Deliver me not over into the will of mine adversaries: *
for there are false witnesses risen up against me, and such as speak wrong.
15    I should utterly have fainted, *
but that I believe verily to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
16    O tarry thou the LORD's leisure; *
be strong, and he shall comfort thine heart; and put thou thy trust in the LORD.

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord
And let light perpetual shine upon them.

I believe to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.

V. The righteous shall be kept in everlasting remembrance.
R. They will not be afraid of any evil tidings.

(Job 13:23-28)
How many are mine iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin. Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy? Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble? For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth. Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths; thou settest a print upon the heels of my feet. And he, as a rotten thing, consumeth, as a garment that is moth eaten.

First Respond

V: Woe is me, O Lord, for I have sinned greviously all the days of my life. Whither shall I flee, but unto thee?
R: O my God, have mercy on me when thou comest at the day of judgement.
V. My soul is sore troubled; but, Lord, be thou my helper.
R: O my God, have mercy on me when thou comest at the day of judgement.

Second Lesson

(Job 14:1-6)
Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee? Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one. Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass; Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

Second Respond

V: Remember not my trespasses, O Lord,
R: When thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.
V. Make thy way plain before my face, O Lord my God.
R: When thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.

Third Lesson

(Job 14:13-16)
O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come. Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands. For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

Third Respond

V: Judge me not, O Lord, according to my deeds; for I have done nothing worthy in thy sight.
R: Wherefore I humbly beseech thy Majesty, that thou, O God, mayest do away mine offences.
V. Wash me thoroughly, O Lord, from my wickedness and cleanse me from my sin; for against thee only have I sinned.
R: Wherefore I humbly beseech thy Majesty, that thou, O God, mayest do away mine offences.
V: Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon them.
R: Wherefore I humbly beseech thy Majesty, that thou, O God, mayest do away mine offences.

[Lauds continues if only one nocturn is being said]

Third Nocturn (Wednesday/Saturday)

Psalter

O Lord, let it be thy pleasure to deliver me: make haste, O Lord, to help me.

Psalm 40 Expectans, expectavi

1   I waited patiently upon the LORD; *
he stooped to me and heard my cry.
2   He lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the mire and clay; *
he set my feet upon a high cliff and made my footing sure.
3   He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; *
many shall see, and stand in awe, and put their trust in the LORD.
4   Happy are they who trust in the LORD! *
they do not resort to evil spirits or turn to false gods.
5   Great things are they that you have done, O LORD my God! how great your wonders and your plans for us! *
there is none who can be compared with you.
6   Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! *
but they are more than I can count.
7   In sacrifice and offering you take no pleasure *
(you have given me ears to hear you);
8   Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required, *
and so I said, "Behold, I come.
9   In the roll of the book it is written concerning me: *
'I love to do your will, O my God; your law is deep in my heart.'"
10   I proclaimed righteousness in the great congregation; *
behold, I did not restrain my lips; and that, O LORD, you know.
11   Your righteousness have I not hidden in my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your deliverance; *
I have not concealed your love and faithfulness from the great congregation.
12   You are the LORD; do not withhold your compassion from me; *
let your love and your faithfulness keep me safe for ever,
13   For innumerable troubles have crowded upon me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see; *
they are more in number than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me.
14   Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; *
O LORD, make haste to help me.
15   Let them be ashamed and altogether dismayed who seek after my life to destroy it; *
let them draw back and be disgraced who take pleasure in my misfortune.
16   Let those who say "Aha!" and gloat over me be confounded, *
because they are ashamed.
17   Let all who seek you rejoice in you and be glad; *
let those who love your salvation continually say, "Great is the LORD!"
18   Though I am poor and afflicted, *
the Lord will have regard for me.
19   You are my helper and my deliverer; *
do not tarry, O my God.

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord
And let light perpetual shine upon them.

O Lord, let it be thy pleasure to deliver me: make haste, O Lord, to help me.

Heal my soul, O LORD, for I have sinned against thee.

Psalm 41 Beatus qui intelligit

1   Happy are they who consider the poor and needy! *
the LORD will deliver them in the time of trouble.
2   The LORD preserves them and keeps them alive, so that they may be happy in the land; *
he does not hand them over to the will of their enemies.
3   The LORD sustains them on their sickbed *
and ministers to them in their illness.
4   I said, "LORD, be merciful to me; *
heal me, for I have sinned against you."
5   My enemies are saying wicked things about me: *
"When will he die, and his name perish?"
6   Even if they come to see me, they speak empty words; *
their heart collects false rumors; they go outside and spread them.
7   All my enemies whisper together about me *
and devise evil against me.
8   A deadly thing, they say, has fastened on him; *
he has taken to his bed and will never get up again.
9   Even my best friend, whom I trusted, who broke bread with me, *
has lifted up his heel and turned against me.
10   But you, O LORD, be merciful to me and raise me up, *
and I shall repay them.
11   By this I know you are pleased with me, *
that my enemy does not triumph over me.
12   In my integrity you hold me fast, *
and shall set me before your face for ever.
13   Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, *
from age to age. Amen. Amen.

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord
And let light perpetual shine upon them.

Heal my soul, O LORD, for I have sinned against thee.

My soul is athirst for the living God; when shall I come to appear before the face of the Lord?

Psalm 42 Quemadmodum

1   As the deer longs for the water-brooks, *
so longs my soul for you, O God.
2   My soul is athirst for God, athirst for the living God; *
when shall I come to appear before the presence of God?
3   My tears have been my food day and night, *
while all day long they say to me, "Where now is your God?"
4   I pour out my soul when I think on these things; *
how I went with the multitude and led them into the house of God,
5   With the voice of praise and thanksgiving, *
among those who keep holy-day.
6   Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul? *
and why are you so disquieted within me?
7   Put your trust in God; *
for I will yet give thanks to him, who is the help of my countenance, and my God.
8   My soul is heavy within me; *
therefore I will remember you from the land of Jordan, and from the peak of Mizar among the heights of Hermon.
9   One deep calls to another in the noise of your cataracts; *
all your rapids and floods have gone over me.
10   The LORD grants his loving-kindness in the daytime; *
in the night season his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.
11   I will say to the God of my strength, "Why have you forgotten me? *
and why do I go so heavily while the enemy oppresses me?"
12   While my bones are being broken, *
my enemies mock me to my face;
13   All day long they mock me *
and say to me, "Where now is your God?"
14   Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul? *
and why are you so disquieted within me?
15   Put your trust in God; *
for I will yet give thanks to him, who is the help of my countenance, and my God.

Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord
And let light perpetual shine upon them.

My soul is athirst for the living God; when shall I come to appear before the face of the Lord?

V. Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord
R. And let light perpetual shine upon them.

(Job 17:1-3, 11-15)
My breath is corrupt, my days are extinct, the graves are ready for me. Are there not mockers with me? and doth not mine eye continue in their provocation? Lay down now, put me in a surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands with me? My days are past, my purposes are broken off, even the thoughts of my heart. They change the night into day: the light is short because of darkness. If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness. I have said to corruption, Thou art my father: to the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister. And where is now my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it?

First Respond

V: The while I trespass daily and have no repentance, the fear of death appalleth me.
R: Because in hell there is no redemption, have mercy on me, O God, and save me.
V. Save me, O God, for thy name's sake, O Lord, and deliver me in your strength.
R: Because in hell there is no redemption, have mercy on me, O God, and save me.

Second Lesson

(Job 19:20-27)
My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth. Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me. Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh? Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book! That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever! For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.

Second Respond

V: Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord
R: And let light perpetual shine upon them.
V. Thou who didst raise Lazarus, already corrupting, from the grave, grant them rest, O Lord
R: And let light perpetual shine upon them.

Third Lesson

(Job 10:18-22)
Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the ghost, and no eye had seen me! I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave. Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little, Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death; A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

Third Respond

V: Deliver me, O Lord, from death eternal in that day of trembling.
R: When heaven and earth shall be shaken, when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.
V. Ah, that day, that day of anger, of calamity and misery: Ah, that great and exceedingly bitter day.
R: When heaven and earth shall be shaken.
V: What, therefore, shall I most wretched sinner say, or what shall I do, who can take no good before so great a judge?
R. when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.
V: Now, O Christ, we beseech thee, we beg thee to have mercy; since thou camest to redeem the lost, do not damn those thou hast redeemed
R. when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.
V: Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon them.
R: when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.
V: Deliver me, O Lord, from death eternal in that day of trembling.

[Lauds normally follows after Matins; else:]

V: The Lord be with you.
R: And with thy spirit.

Eternal Lord God, who holdest all souls in life: Vouchsafe, we beseech thee, to thy whole Church in paradise and on earth thy light and thy peace; and grant that we, following the good examples of those who have served thee here and are now at rest, may at the last enter with them into thine unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

V:Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord
R: And let light perpetual shine upon them.
V: May they rest in peace.
R: Amen.
